Location
Southwest
of Barquisimeto, in the eastern extreme of the Andean
Range.

How to get there
By
road, following the route from Barqui-simeto to
Acarigua, from the towns of Cabudare and Sarare. Or
through the road to Río Claro and Río Amarillo.

Characteristics
It
has an uneven relief and is fit for intensive
agriculture. From the geological point of view, the area
of the park belongs to the formation of Los Cristales,
from the Tertiary period, formed by metamorphic rocks,
similar to those of the Coastal Range. The altitudes
range from 300 m., in the Sarare river, to 1,775 m. in
the highest part of the Terepaima ridge.

Vegetation
A
dense cloud forest dominates the park from 1,100 m. and
up. There are trees like the strangler fig, mountain
chaparro, sage and bitterbush, as well as several
species of ferns.

Fauna
Some
endangered species, like the spectacled bear and the
jaguar, are still found here. Among mammals, the most
important are the armadillo, paca, acouchi, opossum, red
howler monkey, capuchin monkey, skunk, brocket deer,
giant anteater, puma, peccary, etc. Among the varied
birds there are the Ground-Dove, chachalaca, curassow,
the Magpie Tanager, the Great Kiskadee, the Tropical
Mockingbird, the Green Jay, etc. The most common
reptiles are the rattlesnake, ferdelance, garter snakes.
Among saurians, there is the two-headed snake or blind
snake, the iguana and the chameleon.

The
same as for any national park. In the case of
undertaking excursions to the high parts, take adequate
equipment and an expert guide.

Facilities
The
park has several tourist attractions, like the dirt road
from Cabudare to Terepaima, places like the Ridge of Los
Naranjos, Las Delicias, hacienda Las Parchas, where
there are adequate conditions for resting and camping.
There is also the Camino Real, built by the Jirajara
Indians and maintained since colonial times, where
Indian cemeteries and archaeological remains have been
found. There is comfortable lodging in the neighboring
towns.
