In
the central part of the state, in the districts of
Miranda, Colia, Petit and Bolívar.

How to get there
By
land, following the route to the sierra which links
Barquisimeto with Coro.

Characteristics
The
Sierra of San Luis is a natural protected zone, a vital
source of the waters from all the coastal area, and with
many beautiful features. The largest subterranean lakes
of the country are found here, the one of the Acarite
river being the first one. The altitude of the park
ranges from 200 to 1,500 m., and the highest elevation
is Galicia hill, in the western section of the park. The
micro basin of Curimagua is found here, where there are
caves with large galleries, halls and chasms.

Vegetation
The
park has diverse biotopic characteristics. Vegetation
varies according to the altitude. In the piedmont of the
sierra, there are typical species like the sweet acacia,
mesquite and the prickly pear. In the premontane forest,
between 500 and 900 m., there are species like
trumpetwood, wild cotton. On the summit, there are
endemic species which have not been inventoried yet.

Fauna
There
is no inventory of fauna, but it seems to be
representative of the respective altitudinal levels
which serve as refuge and feeding grounds.

Recomendations
A
special permit is required to spend the night and
conduct research in the park. Contact INPARQUES. There
are different excursion trails, but it is advisable to
undertake them with a specialized guide.

Facilities
Very
few, except for lodging available in neichboring peasant
villages. Swimming is possible in the falls which form
on the Ricoa and Hueque rivers. Certain caves, like
those in Acarite, Coy-Coy de Uria, La Dolorita,
Pereguey, can be visited with difficulty.

Temperatures
range between 15° C. and 25° C. Moderate rainfall that
ranges from 1,000 to 1,400 mm. annually.
