National Park

Tapo - Caparo

* Ubication: Mérida Táchira and Barinas State

* Location

On the boundary between the states of Mérida, Táchira and Barinas.

* How to get there

By land, following the road from Barinas to San Cristóbal. After Santa Bárbara, 46 km. ahead, take a right towards Santa María de Caparo.

* Characteristics

This is the most recently created park, occupying number 43 in the list of national parks. Its main objective is to protect the areas that surround the installations of the Uribante-Caparo hydroelectric complex. Two dams are being built at this moment, Vueltosa and Borde Seco. The enormous potential of the region is essentially hydric and it has to be preserved. Many rivers and creeks cross the park. The two most important ones are the Uribante and the Caparo.

* Vegetation

It has not been inventoried, but it corresponds to tropical montane and submontane forest.

* Fauna

An inventory does not exist, but due to the characteristics of the park certain species could be found here, like the spectacled bear, the margay, the paca, etc. It is a migratory bird route, for those which fly from the mountain to the Llano.

* Recomendations

The same as for any national park.

* Facilities

None, except for those found in the neighboring villages. There are certain facilities for picnics and walks at the Uribante river dam.

* Climate

Temperatures range between 12º C. and 30º C.

* Surface

205.000 ha.
