National Park

Laguna de Tacarigua

* Ubication: Miranda State

* Location

In the region of Barlovento, close to Río Chico, in the locality of Tacarigua de la Laguna.

* How to get there

By land, following the road from Higuerote to Río Chico and Tacarigua de la Laguna. There is an airport in Higuerote.

* Characteristics

This park is a coastal lagoon, 30 km. long and 6 km. wide, between the Cúpira and El Guapo rivers. It has a flat relief. Towards the side of the sea there is a long beach, solitary in many sectors, in spite of urban encroachment in the area. Due to its closeness to the capital, its climate and its natural beauties, this area is constantly threatened, for which extreme care is needed when being in the park. It is rich in mangroves, avian fauna and fish species. The climate is warm and humid, but moderated by the breeze that blows from the east. For many years it was an important center for local fishing.

* Vegetation

The mangrove, abundant and varied, is the dominant species, with different types like the red, black, and white mangroves and the button-mangrove. Towards the beach, there are numerous coconut palms, sea grapes and a grass called "saladillo", which grows in sand dunes.

* Fauna

The dominant animal species in the lagoon are aquatic birds, which have their refuge. Here Pelicans, the Magnificent Friga-tebird, darters, flamingoes, cormorants, Common Egrets, Scarlet Ibises, terns and sandpipers are abundant. There are also birds typical of the shrubby savanna, like the Silver-beaked and Crimson-backed Tanagers, the Tropical Gnatcatcher, the Great Kiskadee, warblers, the Oriole Blackbird, the Yellow Oriole, and tanagers. The diversity of fish is enormous and they use the mangroves to spawn. There is striped mullet, bass, flounder, grunt, shad, skate, etc. In 1997 it was decreed Ramsar place of Venezuela.

* Recomendations

A conscientious tourist is the best guarantee for conservation and enjoyment of the park. Follow all the rules for national parks. It is forbidden to use boats with motors greater than 10 HP in the lagoon. Sports fishing is allowed with line.

* Facilities

In the neighboring areas there are swimming facilities for visitors, with food, public rest rooms, pay telephones, boat rentals, etc. Excursions can be done both into the lagoon and towards the beach. The lagoon has two entrances, one on the west side by Boca de Tacarigua de la Laguna, and the other by Madre Vieja, to the east and close to Machurucuto. There are tourist operators who plan organized excursions, also camps.
