National Park

Macarao

* Ubication: Dtto Federal and Miranda State

* Location

In the Libertador Department, Federal District, and the Municipality of San Pedro, Miranda state. It encompasses the watershed of the Macarao and San Pedro and El Jarillo or Lagunetas rivers.

* How to get there

The access is possible through the southwest of Caracas road to Los Teques. Further on Antímano, take a right on a short road that leads to the dam with the same name, on the road from the Colonia Tovar to El Jarillo.

* Characteristics

It is part of the central sector of the Coastal Range, with a typical landscape of mountain relief with slopes that are not too steep. The highest part is in Alto de Ño León, 2,098 m. high. The dominant physical features are the medium and low vegetation formations, and the depression where the river flows.

* Vegetation

The flora of the park is varied and in some sections there are trees covered with moss, bromeliads and orchids. Among the tree species there are the cedar, saman, immortelle, yellow poui, salmwood, etc. It has humid forest and humid low mountain vegetation, and an area of savanna which grew when the primary forest was destroyed by fires.

* Fauna

It has not been studied in depth, but the closeness of the city must have contributed to its dispersal and extinction. There are still certain mammals in its forests, like brocket deer, peccary, rabbits, red howler monkeys, the three-toed sloth, the margay. And among birds we can mention the Little Tinamou, the Helmeted Curassow, the Band-tailed Pigeon, etc.

* Recomendations

It is not recommendable to go to the park alone. Numerous slums have sprouted around the park, making it an unsafe place. If an excursion is planned, it is better to do it in large groups, with specialized guides, and inform the National Guard or Park Ranger of the route, number of visitors, trails to be followed, and estimated hour of return.

* Facilities

Very few, and those that exist are located close to the road. There are trails to walk on or ride on a smule, observing the natural features of the park. It also has mountain roads for four-wheel-drive vehicles.

* Climate

Temperatures range between 12° C. and 24° C., depending on the altitudinal level. Rainy from May to November, dry from December to April.

* Surface

15.000 ha
